Pictures from Hong Kong 1990-97
On June 30, 1997, the crown colony of Hong Kong reverted to China, the "Middle Kingdom", after an enforced 99 years. The inhabitants of the breathtaking consumer and financial metropolis had mixed feelings about this political "expiry date". There were no free elections for the inhabitants under British rule either, but would Communist China abide by treaties? KaJo and the authors (Marieanne and Erich Follath, Der Spiegel) had known this city for decades. Karl had worked here in a British architecture firm during the world tour (1982). Now his friends, with whom he lived in 1982, had also successfully applied for a green card in the USA and left the city. In this volume, the authors guide them through "their" Hong Kong, through its concrete jungle, to deserted islands, temples and high-tech towers - and always close to the people. The city has long been his favorite city in Asia. "Pictures from Hong Kong" was published in 1996 by his own KaJo publishing house.
