Myth Shanghai 2003
in 2003, when KaJo began his photographic work on the "Paris of the East" with the authors Marieanne and Erich Follath (Der Spiegel), this megacity of superlatives was still on speed. The "Pearl of Asia", which KaJo had first visited back in 1978 (in the later boom district of Pujiang, there were only warehouses), seemed to be virtually unstoppable after the turn of the millennium. Foreign visitors were dazzled by a flourishing art avant-garde, the juxtaposition of luxury and tradition, the super-rich and migrant workers. The infrastructure seemed to be exploding and large-scale demolition was already underway to create new districts as if on an assembly line. KaJo spent over eight months photographing in the People's Republic at the time, focusing on the "China's Sacred Mountains" project as well as Shanghai. However, the seemingly carefree upswing is long gone. After the corona lockdown and with the change in the PRC's party leadership, Shanghai has unfortunately lost much of its multicultural charm as perhaps the first global city of the future. The 400-page volume was published by the Rolf Heyne Collection in 2004.
