Lisbon - Hong Kong - by train 1987
Back in the days of the "Iron Curtain", we set off on a transcontinental journey - by rail only - from the far west of Europe to the Far East. 17.343 eventful rail kilometers, the longest track connection on our globe. At that time, this still required the careful study of course books and old Baedeker travel guides; there was no Internet yet. We bought our tickets at local train stations and traveled in all train classes - in the "classless" China "soft bed", "hard bed" and "hard seat". Our rolls of film were stowed in aluminum canisters and made up a large part of our two backpacks. Theoretically, you could cover this gigantic distance in 259 hours (approx. 10.5 days). However, we took 71 days, 18 cities and 20 trains and train classes between February and April 1987. In the world on rails, we focused on fellow travelers, conductors, culinary delights and people along the route in a travel collage. The illustrated book was awarded the Kodak Photo Book Prize in 1988.
