Pictures from Ireland 1990
Heinrich Böll's "Irish Diary" sparked our interest in the "Emerald Isle". Although romanticized, it led us on a search for the soul of Ireland off the beaten track. Armored cars and barbed wire still dominated the streets of Belfast. And analog times still prevailed. No internet or cell phones. Armed with rolls of film, Michelin road maps, printed books and handwritten addresses and recommendations, we roamed the "green" island. Every day brought new surprises. With a Post van converted into a camper van, we not only searched for lonely sandy beaches and uninhabited islands in the Atlantic, but above all for the people and their everyday lives, which are shaped by tradition. Many of the situations, places and people shown are long gone. Published with Jackie's sensitive texts by her own KaJo publishing house, "Pictures from Ireland" was awarded the prestigious Kodak Photo Book Prize in 1990.
