On the road in a camper van 1989-2018

During our 40 years of traveling together, we must have spent more than six years in camper vans or tents. Wonderful, this nomadic life. For the volumes on Ireland and Scotland, we traveled in an ex-VW van from the post office. It had auxiliary heating and on cold mornings it was cozy in the small cabin within minutes. It was also the start of a motorhome movement, there weren't too many like-minded people on the road and it was easy to spontaneously spend the night somewhere in the countryside. For "American Trails" we had bought a Ford 250 pickup with a slide-on cab. 6.9 L displacement! In Australia it was our first four-wheel drive vehicle, a Toyota Land Cruiser Troop Carrier (popularly known as a Troopy) with 4.2 cubic capacity/diesel, limited slip differential and a folding roof. Unbeatable. A VW T5 California was also a team vehicle in Europe for a few years. As rental campers became increasingly unaffordable, we bought an old Toyota Hilux (with a cabin from Bimobil) in New Zealand in 2010. We parked it in a warehouse near Christchurch for the year and used it to explore the land of our Antipodes from January to April. And after selling it in 2016, we opted for an almost identical Bimobil cabin on a Nissan four-wheeler for adventures in Europe. We were able to put this cabin down (for everyday use at home) and it was suitable for winter use. Unfortunately, we had to say goodbye to further travel plans with the motorhome in 2018 due to Karl's serious bladder and kidney operations. But after all these "golden" years, we really can't complain.
