Burma-Myanmar 2005
Although we are both committed individual travelers, one of our best trips in 2004/05 was a group trip - a pilot trip through Burma with One World. It was led by the Burmese Su (who lived in Brauschweig at the time) and One World boss Marion. The program included the temple city of Bagan, the golden rock near Yangon, Inle Lake, a river trip on the Irrawaddy, an overnight train across Burma and visits to numerous small villages. This gave us four weeks to immerse ourselves in the culture of this fascinating country. It is still one of our favorite countries, mainly because of its inhabitants, and we would have loved to produce an illustrated book ... well, we would have. It was a special trip with a family connection and special care. We mostly traveled in an old coach, which also contained bicycles that we could use for short bike tours to remote villages. Thanks to the many family ties, we got to know Burma at first hand. We only perceived the devastating tsunami earthquake on December 26, 2004 as a brief trembling of the earth up on Inle Lake and only learned of the extent of the horror days later (due to the military dictatorship's news blackout).
